At the root to a lot of unhealthy stress is irrational thinking. We are all thinking beings and we have an ‘internal dialogue’ going on in our minds, almost as if we are talking to ourselves. However, we only ever express a fraction of this thinking. These private
thoughts directly impact on our feelings and consequently how we interact with others.
When emotionally distressed we can make conclusions about ourselves, others and the world without recourse to the ‘voice’ of reason. This is why we do not all make the same sense of the same things. The very best of us are vulnerable to illogical, irrational and unhelpful thinking, particularly when emotional or under pressure. In a climate of increasing stress due to changes within the work environment we need to make the best possible sense of changes and challenges.
This online webinar will demonstrated how thinking affects how we feel and behave. Participants will learn about unhelpful thinking and belief systems. They will learn how to become more rational and compassionate in their approach to work and life in general. Evidence- based strategies that are linked to positive mental health and help keep us positive during challenging
times will also be taught.
The target audience for this event is: FET Staff including teachers, tutors, trainers, co-ordinators, managers.
Facilitation: This event will be hosted by FESS and facilitated by Shane Martin. Shane is a Chartered Psychologist of the Psychological Society of Ireland and is dedicated to teaching the very best self-help psychology to empower people to enhance the quality of their lives. His ‘Moodwatchers’ psychology course has been delivered the length and breadth of Ireland. He is the author of ‘Your Precious Life -How to Live it Well’.

Over many decades science has made a wonderful contribution in helping us understand negative emotion. The emphasis on deficits, disorders and disease has allowed for effective interventions to be developed in order to help and support people who are unwell or unhappy.
But why wait until we are unwell to learn about becoming healthier? Why wait until we are unhappy to explore happiness? In recent years psychologists have started to examine positive emotion. This research has focused on what makes people happier, what gives them more meaning and purpose in life, and what measures they can take to lead to overall greater health.
The seminar will outline some simple, practical, and most importantly, evidence-based strategies linked to a better quality of life. The hope is that it will uplift and inspire change in the lives of those who attend but even more importantly inspire participants to incorporate it into their homes, workplaces and communities.
The target audience for this event is: FET Staff including teachers, tutors, trainers, co-ordinators, managers.
Facilitation: This event will be hosted by FESS and facilitated by Shane Martin. Please also note that in response to the fact that a number of people are booking a place at PD events and then not logging into those events, FESS has now taken the decision to oversubscribe our online PD events. This means that we will allow more people book a place at an event than there are places for. Those who log in first at the designated time for the live online event will be those who will be accommodated with a place. We hope that by taking this action, we will be able to maximise the number of people who are getting to log in to our PD events.

This online hands on and participative session will take participants through a series of fun and engaging activity-based energisers that require little or no prior set up.
They are quick activities that can be used as and when needed during online sessions.
They are useful when your online participants need energising and a bit of a fun festive perk up to help to support concentration and engagement.
The energisers are very flexible and while each is designed as a stand-alone activity to increase engagement, energy levels and fun in the lead up to the festive season, they can also be put together as a string of activities to form part of an end of term event you might be running online.
The workshop is suitable for anyone who has already attended a Zoomergisers session, or for those who are new to the topic.
During this professional development session participants will be invited to be active.
The target audience for this event is: FET Staff including teachers, tutors, trainers, co-ordinators, managers.

Anxiety is an important and necessary emotion. We need to feel the ‘pinch’ of pressure in order to prepare for challenges. Deadlines need to be looming in order to help us focus and achieve our goals. Anxiety is our body’s natural mechanism for ensuring that we are prepared for the everyday challenges of life.
With the advent of COVID-19 everything has changed. We find ourselves in a place where we were never before. We are doing different things and doing things differently. We humans like to plan but we find ourselves uneasy and apprehensive about the future. It’s very unsettling.
Anxiety is the prevalent emotion of this time. Excessive anxiety can hinder our preparations and impact on performance. It is vital that we do not become engulfed by it. Learning how to rise to new challenges ensures that we stay motivated and in control. An awareness of coping strategies for times of upheaval and uncertainty would be useful and empowering.
This PD session will offer tips for coping better with anxiety and scientifically validated strategies for growing stronger during challenging times.
The target audience for this event is: FET Staff including teachers, tutors, trainers, co-ordinators, managers.

Please note: Pre-booking is essential. Please do not book onto this session unless you are sure that you will attend / have approval to attend (if required). If an emergency arises, please inform us ASAP (cpdcancellations@fess.ie) as we operate a waiting list system and if time allows we can offer your booked place to another person.

This Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) online professional development event will build on the RPL event delivered as part of the FESS PD calendar in September 2022. However, it is not necessary to have attended this previous event.
This event will commence with a very brief outline of the RPL process. We will then explore the two key roles of
- RPL mentor
- RPL assessor
This practical and interactive event will:
• discuss the induction session for RPL applicants
• demonstrate how the award specification and learning outcomes inform the summative assessment evidence
• look at reviewing evidence – is it sufficient? is it authentic?
• consider the importance of the professional conversation / dialogue between the mentor and the RPL applicant
• look at reviewing the completed portfolio
• demonstrate how to prepare and use an assessment rubric to grade a portfolio
• explore the grading of each learning outcome
During this session we will make reference to the SOLAS – funded FET RPL Toolkit for Education and Training Providers developed by Donegal ETB and Limerick & Clare ETB
The target audience for this event is: FET staff including teachers, tutors, trainers, programme co-ordinators who have a role or interest in implementing RPL.
Facilitation: This event will be facilitated by Martina Needham. Martina has worked in Adult and Further Education for more than 20 years. She was Adult Education Officer and Basic Education Coordinator with Donegal Education and Training Board until her recent retirement. She has significant experience in programme development and recognition of prior learning. She has delivered workshops in Ireland and Europe and has recently completed a Level 9 Special Purpose Award in Recognition of Prior Learning. Martina is an RPL practitioner and was a member of the RPL Practitioner Network National Steering Group. Martina is a strong advocate of lifelong learning and social inclusion.

By the end of this session participants will have had opportunities to:
• Reflect on the purposes and principles of assessment, with a focus on equity.
• Explore authentic assessment and plan for its use in their classroom.
• Reimagine assessment approaches through a universally designed, inclusive lens.
The target audience for this session is: FET staff including management, teachers, tutors, trainers, programme coordinators, guidance counsellors, learning support staff and wellbeing officers.

This one hour online clinic is designed as a follow-up support to allow participants who are completing or have completed the online Locally Devised Assessment course to pose any questions and queries that they may have as a result of engaging with the online course. An informal approach will be adopted for this session where the clinic will be participant-led, which will allow for the sharing and discussion of ideas. These clinics will be hosted on Zoom and the link will be emailed to participants in advance of the event.
