Know the assessment requirements of your programme

It is important that teachers/tutors become thoroughly familiar with the assessment requirements of your provider's validated programme, in particular the validated programme module.
Specific information and guidelines relating to how to assess your Learners can be found in the assessment section of the provider's validated programme/programme module
At Levels 1, 2 and 3, learners are graded as Successful (S) or else the work is Referred (R) back to the learner until the standard is achieved.
At Levels 4, 5 and 6, Learners are graded as follows:
- Distinction (D) for achieving 80% - 100%
- Merit (M) for achieving 65% - 79%
- Pass (P) for achieving 50% - 64%
- Unsuccessful (U) for achieving 49% or less

Be aware of the Major Award your Learner is hoping to achieve

Teachers/tutors should be familiar with the provider's validated programme (including the programme structure) within which they are delivering programme module(s).
Teachers/tutors should also be aware of the relevant QQI certificate and component specifications.

Know the different assessment techniques

Learners will be assessed by the use of valid and reliable assessment techniques. Different techniques will be appropriate and valid to generate different forms of learner evidence for a range of learning outcomes. The assessment technique(s) to be used by the aqssessor will be outlined in the component specification (Section on Specific Assessment Requirements) and the programme module.
For each technique the assessor is required to devise the following:
- an assessment instrument (an examination paper or assessment brief) including instructions/guidelines and assessment criteria
- a marking scheme including outline solutions, as appropriate

Before you can begin to plan for assessing learners, it is important that as a teacher/tutor you have extensive and thorough knowledge of the subject matter being taught and assessed.
Provider's Validated Programme(s)
The validated programme will be given to you by the provider. The programme is a description of what will be taught to enable the learner reach the standards of knowledge, skill and competence of an award, as outlined in the learning outcomes in the QQI component specifications. The programme will also outline for you, in your role as assessor, how to assess the Learners.
Programme(s) leading to QQI CAS awards must be developed by the provider and validated by QQI prior to delivery.
Know your Provider's Quality Assurance Agreement

All providers offering QQI certification to their learners have agreed a set of 9 quality assurance policies and related procedures with QQI.
Your provider could be your centre/school or your centre/school could be part of a bigger provider, for example, an ETB.
It is important that, in your role as assessor, you become familiar with your provider's quality assurance agreement and identify your responsibilities within it.
