The Further Education Support Service has put together a calendar of events for Autumn/Winter 2018 to support those working in the FET environment in DES funded providers

Please note: There is frequently a waiting list for attendance at FESS CPD events. To ensure that the maximum number of people get the opportunity to attend a FESS CPD event, please contact FESS (cpdcancellations@fess.ie) if you cannot attend a CPD event that you have booked a place on. To allow FESS allocate the place to someone on the waiting list, please give a minimum of four working days notice.

     Using Coaching Tools and Techniques in Further Education and Training

FESS has partnered with Kingstown College to offer a professional development day on Coaching in Education.

Coaching is about moving individuals and teams forward towards clarified and agreed goals by using proven tools and techniques to overcome challenges.

On this one-day introductory course participants will learn:

  • What coaching is and how it differs from other interventions such as mentoring
  • The benefits of coaching in education and how coaching can be used in Further Education and Training colleges and centres to develop individuals and teams, for example, learners in the classroom, individual staff members, staff teams
  • Coaching dialogue and powerful questions used by coaches
  • Coaching tools and techniques to unlock potential and capability and achieve better performance and outcomes

This professional development day will support goal 2 of the Further Education and Training Professional Development Strategy 2017-2019 in the following strategic priority areas: Working with and supporting FET learners; leadership and management development.

The target audience for this professional development day is teachers, tutors, trainers and co-ordinators working in FET classrooms and centres.

    Blended Learning - Starting the Journey

FESS has partnered with CDETB Marino College of FE, the Blend4Vet project, H2Learning, CDETB FET Unit and QQI to offer a professional development day to introduce ‘Blended Learning’.

The day will include:

  • A case study on blended learning (CDETB Marino College of FE)
  • Learning from piloting an Erasmus+ project on blended learning (Blend4Vet project)
  • Quality Assurance and governance implications for blended modes of delivery
  • Blended learning supports - training modules and tools developed by the Blend4Vet project
  • A focused conversation on blended learning and considerations for participants own contexts

This professional development day will support goal 2 of the Further Education and Training Professional Development Strategy 2017-2019 in the following strategic priority areas: Working with and supporting FET learners, Quality assurance, Technology enhanced learning (TEL) and Leadership and management development.

The target audience for this professional development day is FET management and staff in key roles, for example, staff who are:

  • supporting change management
  • exploring and / or implementing blended modes of delivery to meet FET learners needs
  • managing / co-ordinating quality assurance and governance

   Active Learning and Teaching Workshop Two: Metacognition and Thinking Activities 

Due to popular demand, this hands-on active learning and teaching workshop is being offered again. This is workshop number two in a series of active learning and teaching workshops offered by FESS. There is no requirement to have attended workshop number one to attend this workshop.

This workshop explores metacognition and thinking and includes a lively and fun range of engaging activities and tools to support FET learners and help them to actively think, plan, look back, evaluate and improve.

The toolkit of activities, tools and approaches used on the day can be integrated into the FET classroom and many can be used by learners to support elements of their assessment work.

This professional development day will support goal 2 of the Further Education and Training Professional Development Strategy 2017-2019 in the following strategic priority area:Working with and supporting FET learners.

The target audience for this workshop is teachers, tutors and trainers working in FET classrooms.

   Exploring the Shift in Programme Develolpment Requirements for CAS Awards under QQI Policies and Criteria for the Validation of Programmes of Education and Training

This one-day CPD event will provide an opportunity for those planning, managing and co-ordinating programme development activities within a provider to begin to familiarise themselves with the QQI document Policies and Criteria for the Validation of Programmes of Education and Training (first published in 2016).

An introduction to new concepts associated with programme development, evaluation and validation, as explained in the QQI document, will be provided.

There will also be an opportunity to review the resources available to support providers developing programmes in adherence to the QQI validation policy.

In addition, those attending will be facilitated to participate in a series of practical activities where they may share ideas, identify challenges and implications and suggest approaches to overcoming issues.

   Hospitality Externship Visiting Programme (EVP) 

This EVP will take place in a hotel in Dublin on Monday 8th October 2018.

The primary target audience for this CPD event will be teachers, tutors, trainers working in the FET sector delivering modules relating to the hospitality area, for example, catering, hospitality, restaurant, reception and front office

 Integration of the Delivery of FET Programmes and Assessment Activities

This one-day professional development day will introduce and reinforce the use of integration in the delivery of FET programmes and assessment activities.

The day will include:

  • An overview of integration
  • Short input on the integration research project carried out by Dr Marie Rooney for FESS, November 2017 – February 2018
  • Case Studies from Management and Learning Practitioners: CDETB Further Education, Donegal ETB Adult Education, LCETB Adult Education, Quality Assurance
  • Needs Identification and Exploration – Integration Guidelines for the FET Sector
  • Workshop Session

This professional development day will support goal 2 of the Further Education and Training Professional Development Strategy 2017-2019 in the strategic priority areas: Working with and supporting FET learners and Quality Assurance.

The target audience for this professional development day is:

  • FET Managers
  • QA Officers and those who have responsibility for the development and delivery of programmes and the assessment of learners within ETBs
  • Teachers, tutors and trainers who assess learners on FET programmes

  An Introduction to Project Management

FET staff are increasingly finding themselves in roles where they are planning and managing small scale activities and projects. Due to popular demand, this one-day workshop is offered again to introduce participants to project management; the discipline of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria.

The target audience for this workshop is FET staff with a role in planning and managing activities and projects.

The primary target audience for this CPD event will be teachers, tutors, trainers working in the FET sector delivering modules relating to providing care to clients in a healthcare setting

    Exploring 'Facilitation' as Part of the Co-ordinator/Manager/Leadership Role

Due to popular demand this workshop is being offered again by FESS. This hands-on workshop is designed for managers, leaders and coordinators who would like to explore the use of facilitation within their roles and experience the use of tools and techniques to help to facilitate groups and teams to have meaningful conversations/discussions, and work towards decision making /commitment.

This professional development day will support goal 2 of the Further Education and Training Professional Development Strategy 2017-2019 in the following strategic priority area: Leadership and management development.

The target audience for this workshop is FET staff working with groups or teams in coordination, management and leadership roles.
