Creating and Using Mind Maps to Support Teaching and Learning in FET

Mind Maps are an excellent tool to help FET teachers, tutors and trainers organise their classes and teaching and learning environments. Mind Maps can help to motivate and engage learners by encouraging creativity and teaching learners how to learn, rather than simply memorizing content. These Mind Map workshop days will be very practical and interactive. Scenario based exercises will be used so that all attendees get to put their learning into practice.

By the end of the day each FET teacher, tutor, trainer will be able to:

• Produce their  own mind maps
• Organise their thoughts using thinking and planning maps
• Present information using Mind Maps
• Create programme plans, lesson plans and handouts using Mind Maps
• Teach Mind Mapping to learners

Software Development/Computer Systems and Networks 

FESS and NNITT (National Network of IT Teachers - formerly NITTA) are offering the opportunity to teachers/tutors/trainers delivering programme modules leading to components in the QQI Software Development and Computer Systems and Networks awards at NFQ levels 5 and 6 to come together. This CPD session will facilitate teachers/tutors/trainers to share their recent experiences of delivering and assessing the new programmes and practical examples of assessment instruments used during the 2015-16 academic year, as well as exploring ideas for assessing learners in 2016-17.

A short input on devising assessment will be provided by FESS. The afternoon sessions will include workshops and discussions, which will be facilitated by teachers who have expressed an interest in sharing their experiences and/or resources.

The facilitators for these sessions are FESS and NNITT.

The target audience for these workshops is teachers/tutors/trainers delivering programme modules leading to components in the QQI Software Development/Computer Systems and Networks awards at NFQ levels 5 and 6. Motivating and Engaging Learners in FET

Working in the Further Education and Training (FET) sector presents teachers/tutors/trainers with a broad range of challenges. These include the wide diversity of abilities and experiences of the learner cohort and various levels of motivation. Social, emotional and behavioural issues amongst this learner cohort add to the complexity of the learning context within which FET staff practise. This session will offer practical strategies to help equip teachers/tutors/trainers to respond to the challenging behaviours encountered daily. It will also give teachers/tutors/trainers an opportunity to share and learn from each other.

 Being LGB and T+ Learners in FET

Following the success of the Yes Equality Campaign and the Marriage Referendum on May 22nd 2015, many believe that LGB and T+ young people in Ireland now feel fully accepted and visible in Irish society. However, the key findings of The LGBT Ireland Report, published on March 22nd 2016, state that only 20% of LGBTI students felt that they belonged completely in their school and only 44% of LGBTI students said they received positive affirmation of their identity.

Based on the importance of these findings, this interactive, participatory workshop will discuss real life experiences of LGB and T+ learners and teachers/tutors/trainers in the FET sector. It will examine the culture within our own institutions and challenge our current use of language, our thinking, and practices, whilst highlighting best practice based on recommendations provided by LGB and T+ support groups and current legislation.

Facilitator: Carrie Archer, Marino College of Further Education

The target audience for this workshop is those with a management role within their provider, for example, principals, deputy principals, centre managers, QA officers and co-ordinators.

This interactive, participatory workshop will discuss real life experiences of LGB and T+ learners and teachers in the FET sector. It will examine the culture within our own institutions and challenge our current use of language, our thinking, and practices, whilst highlighting best practice based on recommendations provided by LGB and T+ support groups and current legislation.

From a teaching perspective, the workshop will help you to look at your current materials and teaching practices and to challenge the language that is used whilst enabling you to look upon your teaching as a way of creating a visibility of the LGB and T+ community in your classrooms. By extension, we will examine legislation in workplaces regarding equality and how it can be implemented into current teaching in work experience/ work practice modules.

  Learner Well-Being in the FET Environment

This interactive workshop is aimed at developing insight into the challenges facing learners with mental health difficulties and the potential importance of education in mental health recovery. Issues relating to policy will be covered and discussed, including the relevance of equality legislation, disclosure and confidentiality guidelines and admission and interview procedures. A range of possible supports for learners will be presented and some challenging case studies/scenarios will be discussed.

This training will support development of equality policy and procedures, and will be beneficial for work with all learners because good practice in supporting learners with mental health difficulties is good education practice.

  Developing Learners' Academic Writing Skills (Levels 5 and 6)

The issues around research, academic writing skills and plagiarism, particularly in relation to generating assessment evidence for assignments, projects and collections of work present challenges at levels 5 & 6, in particular. This session will include theory and practical activities that will provide participants with some tools and activities that will help them to develop their learners’ skills in these areas, including strategies for promoting good research and writing practices among FET learners.

This will be an active and engaging session and participants will be provided with resources that can be used with learners.

   Assessing Learner Evidence in FET for QQI Certification

This workshop will support the role of the assessor in the FET learning environment. It will cover:

• Overview of the assessment process, including key milestones
• Ensuring an understanding of the standard associated with levels 1 – 6 of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)
• Devising assessment instruments (briefs and examination papers), marking schemes and outline solutions
• Making assessment judgements/decisions
